Army’s DCOS assumes duties

Deputy chief of staff of the Army, Major General Sumedha Perera has assumed duties.

He is a distinguish officer of the prestigious Gajaba Regiment of Sri Lanka Army.

Having completed the basic officer cadet training at Officer Training School, Madras - India and Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was first posted to the Rajarata Rifles Regiment in the year 1981 and subsequently posted to the Gajaba Regiment in 1983 as one of the pioneers of the Gajaba Regiment.

Major General Perera actively participated in almost all the military Operations conducted against LTTE since Operation Vadamrachchi and was an active commander who lead the men in the battlefront.

Major General is one amongst few in all three services who has been decorated with highest number of gallantry awards.

He was awarded Weera Wickrama Vibhushanya (WWV) with two claps, Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) with two claps, Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) with three claps,Uttama Seve Padakkama (USP) rewarded for individual acts of gallantry and conspicuous bravery of a high order in the face of the enemy.

The Major General was injured in the battlefield in 1984 and honored with Desha Puthra Medal.

Major General Perera was one of the pioneers of the Air Mobile Brigade of the Sri Lanka Army and Brigade during the high intensive battles fought against LTTE.

He was the Commandant of Army Training School and Infantry Training School.

Major General Perera held the appointment of Military Spokesman of Ministry of Defence and the Director Media at Army battalion of the Gajaba Regiment.

He has commanded the 533 Infantry,

During his illustrated career, he has held many staff appointments at different levels at many military formations in the Army. Adjutant - Kothalawala Defence University, Military Spokesmen in Ministry Of Defence, Colonel General Staff of Overall Operational Command - Colombo, Colonel of the Regiment Gajaba Regiment, Commander Security forces headquarters – WANNI, Commander Security forces headquarters – WEST, Colonel of the Regiment Special Forces, Director General General Staff – Army Headquarters Commander Security forces headquarters – CENTRAL were few in his carrier ladder.

Major General AKS Perera had the opportunity of broadening the horizon of military knowledge having followed number of military courses, seminars and events.

Junior Command Course, Senior Command Course, Parachute Course in India, Mid-Career Course in Pakistan, Disaster Management Seminar - Pacific Command in 2000, Consultancy meeting on Nuclear Security for Major Public Event in Austria / Viana - 2014, Asian Regional Consultation on the High level independent Panel on UN Peace Operation in Bangladesh - 2015 were few amongst them and he is graduated from National Defence University PLA in china.
