No standards for most of whitening creams

No standards for most of whitening creams Featured

The National Movement For Consumer Right’s Protection says that the lack of a regulatory body for cosmetics is becoming a threat to consumers.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror', the chairperson of the movement - Ranjith Withanage said that the situation worsened with the Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Act No. 27 of 1980 being removed by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority Act brought in last year.

Accordingly, this has enabled Cosmetics and devices to be brought into Sri Lanka from any country.

Research has revealed that cosmetics with high bleach content are getting more common in the local market as a result of this, he said.

Such products include whitening creams, of which the majority lacks proper standards, he added.

When the movement raised this concern with the Health ministry a year ago, they promised to establish a regulatory body on this regard, soon. However, a certain group is behind the delay, Mr. Ranjith further said.
