The Committee on Public Representations on the Constitution (CPRC), which seeks public input on the new Constitution, has received a public proposal which suggests to name Anuradhapura as the next capital city while maintaining Colombo as the commercial capital of the country.
The proposal has been tabled by former Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University - Prof. C.M. Maddumabandara.
The CPRC is chaired by Attorney-At-law Lal Wijenayake.
The Anuradhapura kingdom is considered one of the oldest and advanced ancient civilizations in Asia as well as the longest running kingdom in ancient Sri Lanka.
The city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
