The first agreement was signed between Maithripala Sirisena and UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe after offering prayers at the statue of the Buddha opposite the Colombo Town Hall as monks imparted their blessings on the duo with a homily.
Also present on the occasion were the head of the National Movement for Social Justice the Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaranatunga, Democratic Party leader Gen. Sarath Fonseka, National People's Liberation Front leader Hemakumara Nanayakkara, UNP National Organiser Daya Gamage, UNP Leadership Council chairman Karu Jayasuriya along with several others.
Several other political parties including the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) have also agreed to support Maithripala Sirisena and the MoUs are based on the abolishment of the Executive Presidency, the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and the appointment of Independent Commissions.
