Zika : be cautious when travelling

The Ministry of Health says Sri Lankans need not unnecessarily panic over the Zika virus reported in several Latin American countries, no such cases were found in Sri Lanka so far.

Zika is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also spreads dengue and chikungunya.

The symptoms in adults and children are similar to those for dengue fever but generally milder, including flu-like aches, inflammation of the eyes, joint pain and rashes although some people have no symptoms at all.

The Ministry however says that individuals should remain cautious when travelling in countries affected by the virus.

The ministry says necessary facilities for testing is available in Sri Lanka.
