This was informed when a case alleging Ranatunga had obtained a bribe for some official work during his tenure as Chief minister of Western Province, was taken up before the Colombo Fort Magistrate.

The case, filed by a businessman named Jehan Mendis cites that Ranatunga had obtained the bribe in return for giving a certificate from the Provincial council after filling a land in Meethotamulla area and removing illegal residents nearby.

The case is to be taken up on March 09 while the second suspect - Maureen Ranatunga was allowed to go overseas until March 09.
