No laws to punish for match fixers?

No laws to punish for match fixers? Featured

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) says that Sri Lanka currently lacks criminal law provisions applied to corruption in sport, especially in match-fixing.

Speaking to media, BASL President - President’s Counsel Geoffrey Alagaratnam has said new legal reforms to punish on such grounds are required as prevailing local laws don't recognise match fixing as a specified crime.

However, he said that punishment can come under the “cheating” offence under the Penal Code of Sri Lanka.

The BASL President also stated that new laws would be introduced to punish match fixers.

Speaking on this regard, Sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera too has said that new laws to punish such individuals would be introduced in the next two months.

However, the Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket - Thilanga Sumathipala said that individuals engaged in match fixing can be penalised under the cheating laws.
