Pyramid schemes still operate

Pyramid schemes still operate Featured

Several pyramid schemes are operating in Sri Lanka despite the existence of preventive laws under the banks act no. 30 of 1988.

Legal quarters are monitoring two such schemes being run by Global Life and Best Life.

In 2012, the media highlighted these illegal schemes, but the government at the time did not enforce the law, it is alleged.

Just recently, police arrested three of the pyramid racketeers at Meegalewa in Galgamuwa and were remanded.

Seized from the suspects were a modern car, solar panels and documents to recruit new members.

These institutions claim that after investing Rs. 68,500, beneficiaries can earn up to Rs. 1.6 million a month.

When new members sign up, it is mandatory for them to buy a solar panel, and a commission of Rs. 6,000 is paid for each new member.

Complaints with regard to pyramid schemes can be made to the Central Bank on telephone no. 0112 477 100 or 0112 477 105.
