The Health Ministry says 20,000 Sri Lankans on average die every year due to smoking-related illnesses.

Therefore, the ministry has taken measures to prevent and strictly enforce the law against the smuggling in of cigarettes.

This is in addition to the steps taken to discourage smoking among the public.

The cabinet has approved a proposal to ban all cigarettes imported illegally, said minister Rajitha Senaratne.
