Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake has stated that Azwer tendered his resignation a short while ago.

According to the provisions of the constitution, the Parliament Secretary General has informed the Elections Commissioner to appoint a suitable person for the vacant position.

It is said that the UPFA has decided to appoint All Island SriLanka People Congress Eastern Provincial Council member and the former minister Ameer Ali to the vacant position.

Ali and two others of the Eastern Provincial Council representing the All Island Muslim Congress recently decided to function independently in the provincial council.
