Forming new party unavoidable – Basil Featured

Forming a new party is unavoidable, says former minister Basil Rajapaksa.
Today’s sociopolitical situation is similar to 1947, when SWRD Bandaranaike had to leave the UNP, according to him.

There is a need for a new political force since UNP, SLFP and JVP activists are disappointed with present politics, he has earlier told BBC Sandeshaya.

Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and ex-defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa too, said at the weekend a new party would be formed.

For that, a party called ‘Apey Nidahas Peramuna’, with the ‘lotus bud’ as its symbol, was registered with the involvement of Basil Rajapaksa before the last general election.

The ex-president has said that he would not leave the SLFP under any circumstances.

MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara has told ‘Dinamina’ that none of the Rajapaksas were members of the joint opposition, which is not discussing the forming of a new party.
