Sidath to lead Ranil's committee! Featured

Sidath Wettamuny, the former chairman of the SLC interim committee, is highly likely to be named as the chief of the five-person committee that will be appointed to oversee activities of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), reports say.

The Prime minister will appoint this committee with the approval of the ICC, sources from the Prime minister's office say.

The committee, which will consist of three individuals appointed by the Prime minister and two SLC representatives, will oversee financial activities of the SLC as well as pass a new SLC constitution after abolishing the current constitution, reports add.

Dayasiri, Thilanga, oppose

However, the move has been strongly opposed by Sports minister - Dayasiri Jayasekera and SLC chairman - Thilanga Sumathipala.

Although the Sports minister has informed President Maithripala Sirisena about this issue, it is said that a favourable response had not been received.

Even though the 'Thilanga Sumathipala faction' received the backing of the President during the recent SLC elections, their opponents - 'the Ranatunga faction' was not backed by the Prime minister either.

However, Sri Lanka Cricket has become a minor centre of political power tussles rather than being a mere sports control body and therefore, SLC officials construe that the Prime minister's intervention lead up to a political issue in the future.

The board of officials who were elected at the recent SLC elections are all members or business affiliates of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party led by President Maithripala Sirisena. It was also reported that the Prime minister (who is the leader of the UNP) had even attempted to postpone the SLC elections after speculating that this could happen.

Dayasiri accused

Meanwhile, a group of United National Party (UNP) seniors in the government had urged to seek legal redress against Sports minister - Dayasiri Jayasekera for being critical of the Prime minister's advice with regard to the SLC.

They are of the opinion that a Cabinet minister should not be critical of the Prime minister in this manner.

However, they have been informed that the Premier would take an action on this regard soon.
