Christmas dawns at midnight today (24) to mark the birth of the baby Jesus, with two rare occurrences – it happens with a full moon, and a giant asteroid will sail by earth.

The last time full moon fell on Christmas was in 1977, and it will happen again in 19 years, in 2034.

Prof. Chandana Jayaratne of physics department of Colombo University says,

Also, asteroid 163899, or 2003 SD 220, will pass Earth from 6.7 million miles away.

This asteroid is 1.5 miles wide and will be visible via telescope.
