Professor attached to Medical Faculty of Peradeniya University, S.A.M. Kularatne, stated that though it was identified in eastern coastal areas of the country it was not found among people in the central areas.
The particular skin disease which is prevalent in India, has started spreading in Sri Lanka recently, he added.
Spread by the bite of particular type of flies,the disease causes skin ulcers which take a considerable period of time to cure,Prof. Kularatne further stated.
Though it is a skin disease in certain occasions it has the capacity to effect internal organs.
People who develop clinical evidence of infection have one or more sores on their skin and they should immediately consult a doctor.
