Fresh hearing of case of Lankan woman

The Saudi government has decided to have a fresh hearing of the court case pertaining to the Sri Lankan woman who has been ordered to be stoned to death, said deputy finance minister Dr. Harsha de Silva.

Describing it as a victory achieved by Sri Lanka, he said a team of officials of his ministry has been permitted to visit the woman.

Attempts would be made to get the ruling against her changed, he said.

Meanwhile, foreign employment minister Thalatha Athukorale told parliament yesterday that sending women for domestic servants would be minimized.

Responding to a question raised by MP Buddhika Pathirana, She said no decision has been taken to stop sending workers to Saudi Arabia.

The minister added that the government expected a positive outcome with regard to the woman sentenced to death.
