Even as the Department of Registration of Persons has made arrangements to introduce an electronic identity card next year, a container-load of laminating rolls for the identity cards presently in use has been imported, reports say.

These more than 100,000 laminating rolls, the highest ever lot ordered at a given time, had arrived on November 05 and are now stored at the Department’s stores.

Previously, not more than 1,000 rolls had been ordered at a time.

Each roll can laminate 400 identity cards, and a total of 40 million identity cards can be prepared with them, an employee of the department told Sri Lanka Mirror.

These laminating rolls had been imported with the mediation of the department’s commissioner general R.M.S. Sarathkumara.

Employees question the need for such a huge amount of laminating rolls when the identity cards presently in use are to be disposed of.
