Commenting on the Avant Garde issue, he said he never said the company was correct, adding that he intervened to counter attempts to use it to attack the UNP.

Fernando said he has made it clear the contract reached with the previous regime gave Avant Garde the legal protection.

He said he pointed out the correctness of the legal argument raised Wijedasa Rajapakse and Thilak Marapana, but never said the company was correct.

The minister refuted charges that he had accepted money from Avant Garde, adding that he would resign if it is proven that he has had any connection with it, even over the phone.

Fernando also said the remark by minister Nimal Siripala de Silva that there was not even a remnant of good governance left should be taken seriously.

Further, some may have a dream of becoming the PM, he said, and when asked as to whether he was referring to colleague Rajitha Senaratne, he said if the hat fits, anyone can wear it.

When contacted for a comment, de Silva said he was busy, while attempts to reach SLFP spokesman Dilan Perera were unsuccessful.
