Marapana behind Dangerous Drugs Control Board fiasco Featured

It was Thilak Marapana, resigned as law and order and prison reforms minister, who had controversially recommended and appointed former policeman M.M. Sirisena Herath as chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Control National Board, in place of Dr. Nilanga Samarasinghe, an experienced medial professional.

Marapana had said that the appointment was made by the president through a letter issued by the secretary to the president.

However, Dr. Samarasinghe was neither informed nor his removal effected in accordance with the law.

Later, the prime minister intervened and instructed him to continue as the chairman.

Before the general election, Dr. Samarasinghe had given a report to secretaries of leading political parties detailing about politicians involved in narcotic drugs and ethanol rackets.

It has mentioned 25 ministers and politicians, but no action has been taken with regard to them so far.
