UPFA heading for split ; PC polls to be postponed! Featured

The Provincial council elections which was to be held next March are likely to be postponed, government sources say.

The indecision existing between the UNP and SLFP over how the polls should be held and the dates which are yet to be fixed are said to be the issues.

Although it was initially decided to hold this election under a mixed electoral system, the UNP has opposed the ratio of the mix which was proposed by minister Faizer Mustapha.

The UNP, which had initially agreed to a mixed electoral system is now maintaining that this election should be held according to the old system.

UPFA splits :

Meanwhile, signs of a split within the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has become apparent.

Speaking at a recent event in Kaduwela, President Maithripala Sirisena has hinted at the UPFA being dissolved.

He had said that he will be committed for the victory of the SLFP at the PC polls.

Later on the same day, cabinet, deputy and state ministers of the SLFP were summoned to the Presidential secretariat for a discussion on the election.

At the meeting, the President had said that the SLFP should contest alone at the PC polls and other UPFA affiliate parties are welcome to join them.

MR affiliates remain separate

Meanwhile, the SLFPers affiliated to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to contest the upcoming PC polls as a separate group, together with several member parties of the UPFA.

Although Mahinda Rajapaksa is to lead a new alliance, he is to maintain a low profile in order to evade the charge of splitting up the SLFP.
