Government spokesman Gayantha Karunatilake rejects accusations by Weerawansa that he had been politically avenged.
Speaking to the media yesterday (29), Karunatilake said the MP had even thanked the PM for his mediation.
Interference in police matter
When asked by BBC Sandeshaya as to whether this amounted to an interference in a police matter, the spokesman said the PM had to look into it as it had been raised in parliament as an MP’s privilege issue.
The PM never interfered with the law, he stressed.
Weerawansa has been accused of possessing a fake passport and furnishing false information for a new one.
His passport was released on a Rs. 100,000 bond two days ago.
When Weerawansa was detained by the CID at the airport, MP Dinesh Gunawardena raised it in parliament.
Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said the PM would intervene and allow Weerawansa to leave the country.
Meanwhile, Weeranwansa says he will file a human rights petition against police over the incident.
