Kidney disease causing CIC fertilizer consignment seized

Kidney disease causing CIC fertilizer consignment seized Featured

The CIC agro-company has imported a consignment of fertilizer containing the banned heavy metal cadmium in breach of regulations pertaining to the importation of chemical fertilizer.

The Sri Lanka Standards Institution has found a 23.7 per cent content of cadmium, although international regulations permit less than 5 pc and despite CIC’s claims of a content of 2 pc.

Authorities have seized the consignment, according to ‘Sathhanda.’

The WHO says fertilizer containing cadmium is a key contributor to kidney disease.

Attempts to contact the Fertilizer Secretariat which deals with the quality of imported fertilizer, failed.

Yesterday (23), the agriculture minister appointed a committee investigate this matter.
