Half the pharmacies are without pharmacists!

Half the pharmacies are without pharmacists! Featured

Only around 1,500 out of the 3,020 pharmacies in Sri Lanka have a licensed pharmacist, which is said to be mandatory by law, ‘Ravaya’ reports quoting the association of pharmaceutical drug traders.

The western province alone has 1,340 pharmacies, while it is rare to find a pharmacy in difficult areas.

Private importers are importing drugs in unlimited numbers, as the government is without a proper mechanism to determine the quantities and varieties wanted locally.

The same drug is imported under various brand names and sold at different prices.

Despite the introduction of the new drug act, such issues remain unresolved, the association says, adding that the government, doctors and marketing institutions should get together and take proper remedial action.
