JVP wants US to lift Cuba sanctions

The JVP has asked US President Barak Obama to withdraw all sanctions against Cuba and its people and affirm their right to exist as an independent state.

The JVP handed over a letter to the US ambassador in Colombo, which contains the request.

His Excellency,
The Ambassador of the USA for Sri Lanka,
The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka,
Colombo 03.

Dear Ambassador,

The Blockade Day – 17th October

The process of enacting economic sanctions against Socialist Cuba by the USA continued for several decades is being implemented currently in a new phase. Despite reports published in the media that sanctions enacted by the USA against Cuba and its people have been withdrawn, our belief is that, in reality, the sanctions are being implemented without any change.

This matter drew attention at the 7th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference for Solidarity with Cuba held in Vietnam last month. At this conference the views expressed by the delegates of your country too were that the decision of the USA to withdraw sanctions is not a withdrawal of sanctions but a manoeuvre to evade the world opinion that arose against USA as a result of continuing sanctions against Cuba. We too consider the act not as a withdrawal of sanctions but normalization of the US policy against Cuba.

As such, we, as a political party, totally support the resolution to support Cuba to be debated at the UN sessions and continue to support Socialist Cuba and its people. We would ask US President Barak Obama and all other authorities, through you, to withdraw all sanctions against Cuba and its people and affirm their right to exist as an independent state.

Thank you.

For Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (People’s Liberation Front – JVP)
