The 150th anniversary celebration of the Colombo Municipal Council this year has been put off in view of the termination of its official term on October 31.

Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil, hoping to hold a big celebration with the participation of foreign diplomats, requested the president and the prime minister for an extension of the term until end-December.

But, neither of them have responded positively yet.

The term of Hambantota Municipal Council ends on October 31, while 21 local government bodies will have their terms terminated on October 16.

These LG bodies are – Municipal councils of Dehiwela-Mt. Lavinia, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Moratuwa, Negombo, Gampaha, Galle, Matara, Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya and the Pradeshiya Sabhas of Kurunegala, Badulla, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura, Kalumune, Kolonnawa, Kotikawatte, Suriyawewa, Hambantota, Kundasale, Mahanuwara Kadawathasathara and Gangawata Korale.

The terms of 312 LG bodies have already terminated and are being run by their respective secretaries.

Provincial councils minister Faizer Mustafa said yesterday that the next election for LG bodies would be held under 70 per cent of the electoral system and 30 pc of the proportional representation system.
