Started in the early 1970s, the division has employed the hybrid method to develop these plant species.
It has so far introduced 36 cut flower, 31 lady jane anthuriam, four dendrobium, one phalaenopsis orchid and one cattleya orchid species.
These species suit Sri Lanka’s weather, resist disease and pests and give high harvests, all of which are requirements for export quality flowers.
The division also engages in research in plant culture, plant breeding, crop cultivation methods, disease and pest control and post-harvest technology.
It also provides consultancy services and publishes various publications on floriculture.
The country has more than 150 floricultural associations.
