‘Soldiers, policemen are not above the law’

Certain sections of society believe legal action should not be pursued against wrongdoers among members of the armed forces and police, but they are not above the law, says human rights activist Ruki Fernando.

It is very dangerous that there is an opinion that they could commit any crime, and they should be allowed to do so, he said.

Especially, many in the south are opposed to punishing members of the Army.

They ask as to why terrorists are not punished if war heroes have to face punishment, but those punished are not war heroes but criminals.

A government has a right to wage war, but there is an accepted method of doing it, he said.

Fernando said there is a delay in pursuing action with regard to complaints against soldiers and policemen, also due to postponements of hearing, delays in the attorney general’s department and judges going on leave.
