A latest UN report on MDGs says the inequality in income distribution in Sri Lanka is of concern, as 38 per cent of the national income is distributed among 10 pc of the country’s super rich.
Only 1.5 pc of the national income is distributed among 10 pc of the poor, it says.
Colombo has the lowest poverty level, at 1.4pc, while it is 28.8 pc for Mullaitivu and 20.8 for Moneragala.

Sri Lanka has achieved the target seven years early in achieving the MDG of halving, between 1990 and 2015, the people who earn less than a dollar per day.

Almost all Lankan children receive primary education.
Gender inequality
The numbers of girls and boys attending school are equal.
Another MDG is equal education for both men and women.
Equal opportunities for women in employment and representation in parliament are the main objectives.
