Sand mining caused increase in crocs

Sand mining caused increase in crocs Featured

The crocodile population close to rivers and other water-bodies has risen due to sand-mining, says environmentalist Pubudu Seneviratne.

Deaths due to crocodile attacks have been reported since only recently.

Sand mining has destroyed the habitats of crocodiles and it has aggravated the human-crocodile conflict, mainly close to Kala Oya and Malwatu Oya.

Another reason for the conflict is that crocodiles are turned to easy prey following human settlements having mushroomed close to rivers.
