Explaining reasons for the decision, MP Prasanna Ranatunga said this would not be the opportunity to challenge Sampanthan, as some tried to send a wrong message to the international community.
Previously, SLFP MPs opposed to the supporting of a coalition government and several UPFA affiliate MPs had objected to Sampanthan’s appointment.
47 UPFA MPs in the opposition
Thirty six SLFP MPs loyal to Rajapaksa, three from the MEP, five from the NFF, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Chandrasiri Gajadheera and Udaya Gammanpila will function as the opposition, reports say.
However, Douglas Devananda and Arumugam Thondaman are yet to announce their decision.
