The Department of Wildlife Conservation says that 346 species of animals in Sri Lanka are under the threat of becoming extinct.

Reptiles are those who face the gravest threat with amphibians, birds, mammals and fish facing the most to least threat respectively.

The area where the most number of animals are threatened is the Rathnapura District. The area where the most number of vegetation is threatened is the Kandy district.

With over 70% of natural habitat being destroyed, Sri Lanka is identified as as one of a biodiversity hotspots in the world.
