JVP calls for a Truth & Reconciliation Commission

JVP calls for a Truth & Reconciliation Commission Featured

Although a Truth and Reconciliation Commission was to be appointed in 2009, it went ignored until the Rajapaksa regime ended, senior lawyer Upul Kumarapperuma says.

Mr. Kumarapperuma, who was also named to the JVP National List MP at the recently concluded General Election, said that the previous regime had no need to listen to the issues faced by the people of the North-East region.

If such a measures existed, it would have helped to clear the present ambiguity faced with regard to Sri Lanka in the international arena, he added.

Mr. Kumarapperuma said that such a 'Truth Commission' was set up in South Africa after the Apartheid crisis.

He was speaking during a special media briefing of the JVP held at the Solis Hall in Pitakotte.

The press conference was held in participation of the JVP, university teachers, artistes, environmentalists, professional and representatives of civil organizations.

A list of proposals was put forward to be presented to the President and the Prime Minister calling for immediate reforms.
