The Department of the Attorney General has been consulted to amend the Prevention of Crimes Ordinance, in order to list sexual offenders in the island, Acting police spokesman - SSP Priyantha Jayakody says.

He adds that the amendment will take place within the next two months.

He added that when considering a string of murders in the recent past, there is a trend of past offenders resorting to crimes again under the backdrop of where a background check is not done when recruiting domestic help.

In this backdrop, public should be more cautious when recruiting domestic help, he emphasises.

In the first half of the 365 days ending on 2015 June 31, police have received 795 cases of rape, 84 cases of child abuse, and 10 cases of child murders, SSP Jayakody said.
