According to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, parliamentary approval is needed to increase the Cabinet to more than 30 members when a national government being formed.
However, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake protested against the proposal arguing that a National govt. has not been formed. He was also echoed by several opposition MPs including opposition leader R. Sampanthan.
However Speaker Karu Jayasuriya interpreted that the govt. that has been formed at present can be identified as a National Govt.
