Citing internal sources of the SLFP, the newspaper says that the objective of this is to stop the missions planned by the Mahinda Rajapaksa faction, through Chamal, who is the eldest of the Rajapaksa family.

The Mahinda Rajapaksa faction had planned to pressurise the government after initiating a separate mission in Parliament against the national government.

Chamal Rajapaksa standing with President Maithripala Sirisena had been advantageous to the government and Chamal has been tasked with the above mentioned responsibilities on the complete agreement of the President and former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

It is said that Chamal Rajapaksa has reportedly given an unofficial assurance that he will restrain the activities of Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Also, the President has tasked Chamal Rajapaksa with the responsibility of formulating a report after inquiring the ideas of SLFP MPs prepared to join the national government.
