 As Prasanna Ranatunga was elected to the parliament the vacancy which opened up for the position of Western Province Chief Minister is in high demand  and the senior provincial council member Hector Bethmage has made a request from the President Maithripala Sirisena to consider him for it.
 
The Chairman of the Western Provincial Council Sunil Wijeratne, ministers Gamini Thilakasiri and Ranjith Somawansha have also made requests for the position.
 
It is further reported that certain individuals have informed the former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga of their eligibility for the position and requested her support to obtain it.
