This was the plan of the president and prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe even before the parliamentary polls.
Ex-president Chandrika Kumaratunga was present at this SLFP CC meeting after an absence of 10 years.
She will head a committee appointed to take forward the decision, also comprising Nimal Siripala de Silva, Susil Premajayantha, S.B. Dissanayake, Sarath Amunugama and Mahinda Samarasinghe.
According to political sources, the SLFP will join the UNP and other parties for a period of two years and based on the results, will decide the next course of action.
SLFP CC member Nandimitra Ekanayake said the main objective of this government would be to unite as a country and nation to face the upcoming Geneva challenge.
Ranil to take oaths tomorrow
Meanwhile, Ranil Wickremesinghe will take oaths as the prime minister tomorrow, said his media coordinator Saman Athaudahetti.
Thereafter, the new cabinet will be announced.
The opposition ridiculed Wickremesinghe after president Sirisena appointed him the PM after the presidential election, but he had the last laugh after polling the highest ever preferential votes of 500,566 at the recent general election.
