Both UNP, UPFA confident of victory

Both the UNP and the UPFA believe that they would be the winner at tomorrow’s parliamentary polls.

They are presenting opinion survey reports to support their claims.

UPFA leaders say a State Intelligence Service survey shows they will gain 105 seats, while the UNP quotes the same survey and say they will secure 108 seats.

However, reports reaching Sri Lanka Mirror indicate that the SIS is yet to publicise such a report.

A senior official at the president’s office told Sri Lanka Mirror that the SIS has reported to the president that the UNP would win a majority of seats, but less than the 113 seats needed for a parliamentary majority.

As results of several districts are unpredictable, there is a likelihood of a change in the final result, he said.

President Maithripala Sirisena has said that he could mediate and secure the remaining seats needed for the UPFA to form a government if it comes near the 113 seat mark.

This has been mentioned in his controversial letter to his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa.
