Geneva report will have political implications - Sampanthan Featured

The report on Sri Lanka that will be submitted to the UNHRC in Geneva in September will have large political implications locally, says R. Sampanthan.

Addressing a public meeting in Trincomalee, he said the international community would not have exerted such pressure had the country’s rulers acted with transparency in dealing with war crimes allegations.

He asked the country’s leaders to consider this matter in the future at least, and urged the government to declare its position in this regard.

Even after the end of the war, justice has not been done for the people of the north and the east, Sampanthan said, adding the government should ensure equal rights for all communities, that would in turn result in peace in the country.

The prevailing atmosphere will be advantageous only to those who are bent on dividing the country, he warned.
