Addressing a public rally in Piliyandala yesterday (05), he said contrary to accusations by Mahinda Rajapaksa supporters, it was Rajapaksa confidante G.L. Peiris who had submitted a political proposal to divide the country.
Since that proposal was defeated by the JHU, the country will no longer have to endure such a threat, he said.
The president, the prime minister and even Mahinda Rajapaksa have recognized the unitary status of the country today, he noted, adding that the call since 1949 for federalism will only be a pipe-dream.
A mandate at a referendum and a 2/3 parliamentary majority is needed to introduce federalism, and the TNA cannot do that with 10 or 15 seats, he noted.
