As leader of United Citizens’ Front, he says in a statement that an investigation was ongoing to determine if 75 cyanide capsules, 300 grams of cyanide powder, GPS, mobile phone and Sri Lankan and Indian currency notes seized from LTTE members arrested on information provided by former leading LTTE member Kumara Guru, were to be given to LTTE members to arrive in the island.
Kumara Guru was arrested while trying to flee to Malaysia from Tamil Nadu on a fake passport, says Attanayake.
Media quoted the intelligence as having said that around 2,000 LTTE members, not rehabilitated, were at large in Sri Lanka, according to him.
Also, in a shootout with LTTE members in Jaffna while resisting arrest, several were killed by the military, he says.
In the meantime, the TNA election manifesto demands all detained LTTE members cleared of all charges and acquitted.
At the first TNA political meeting in Jaffna, crowds cheered at every reference by the speakers to LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, Colombo media reported quoting Udayan newspaper.
The TNA manifesto renewed calls for the amalgamation of the north and the east for a self-rule, as proposed through the northern provincial council, he says.
In such a scenario, people have a right to know the position of UNF leaders who work closely with the TNA, Attanayake says, adding that he hopes they will declare their stance to the people.
On behalf of the people who respect unitary status of the country, he says, he would like to know if the UNF leadership can give an assurance before the election whether they will end the unholy alliance with the TNA if it does not abandon its stance.
