The coast conservation department, in a bid to conserve the corals around Pigeon’s Island at Nilaveli in Trincomalee, has to remove the invading star fish from the area every three months.

Rich in rare corals, this reef is the first beach park in Sri Lanka, and the only coral ecosystem with more than 50 species.

Trincomalee district coordinator of the coral conversation project Chandana Seneviratne said star fish feeds on the corals, sucking out the juice.

The Star fish population has increased following the extinction of triton oysters that eat star fish following the 2004 tsunami, he said.
