Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will sign the agreement on behalf of the UNF, while leaders of the other stakeholders too, will attend the occasion at 9.30 am tomorrow (28) at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.
Prominent among the other signatories are the Trade Unions Movement for a Just Society, Purawesi Balaya, LSSP Alternative Group, Lawyers for Democracy and Ceylon Teachers Union, said convener of the collective of citizens’ groups and trade unions Saman Ratnapriya.
The MoU will aim to establish a just society that respects democracy, as the corrupt and repressive forces led by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa are attempting to reverse the victory gained on January 08.
It will include 15 points, including the abolition of the executive presidency after the tenure of incumbent Maithripala Sirisena, a new electoral system combining first-past-the-post and proportional representation systems, formulation of new international-level laws to remove judges accused of corruption in order to establish an independent judiciary, establishment of independent commissions as per the 19th amendment and introducing a code of ethics for all people’s representatives.
