The IGP has been instructed to investigate, in collaboration with the external affairs ministry, and submit a report about Abu Shuraih Sailani, cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said.
Police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said the man had lived in Kandy for some time and later went to stay in Kotahena area.
Sailani had been the principal of two international schools at Galewela and Kotahena, and had later left for employment in Syria, he said.
It is yet to be established as to whether he had joined ISI militants, said the police spokesman.
