President Maithripala Sirisena has given formal approval to grant nominations for Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest the upcoming General election under the UPFA ticket, reports say.

Former minister Basil Rajapaksa confirmed this to 'Sri Lanka Mirror'.

The news is to be officially declared at an UPFA party leader meeting at the Abhayaramaya at 4.00pm today.

A letter on this regard has also been issued by the UPFA, signed by the party General Secretary - Susil Premajayantha.
