The department was started on 07 July 1890.

July 07 was declared the national archaeology day in 1990 at the centenary anniversary of the department.

The department has planned several events to mark the national archaeology week, including the issuance of a commemorative stamp and four other stamps depicting places of archaeological importance in Sri Lanka.
