'Land grabbing under good governance regime too’

'Land grabbing under good governance regime too’ Featured

The grabbing of land owned by the fisher community by using powers of the state is taking place under the good governance regime of president Maithripala Sirisena just like it happened during the times of its predecessors, says the National Fisheries Solidarity Movement.

The government is forcibly acquiring land owned by the fisher and farmer communities in the guise of state projects implemented under various names, secretary of the organization Herman Kumara has told jdslanka.org.

The land thus acquired is being either sold or given on long-term lease to foreign businesses, which has now become a permanent feature of the policy of the state, he said.

In order to gain legal backing for the land grabbing, the government publishes some act or gazette, he charged.
