Avant Garde Chairman gets OK to travel abroad

Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Pieris yesterday (22) granted permission for Avant Garde Chairman Nissanka Senadhipathi to travel abroad for three months to attend to his business.

Permission was granted as the CID had informed the Additional Magistrate that they did not object to the Avant Garde owner leaving the country.

Avant Garde is being investigated in relation to their floating armoury found in Galle Harbour earlier this year.

This ruling of the Additional Magistrate would lift the earlier prohibition placed on Senadhipathi's overseas travel. In January 2015, the Galle Police DIG had raided the ship Mahanuwara, anchored at the Galle Harbour, based on a tip off.

Investigations revealed that the ship carried 22 containers filled with firearms.

The DIG who later briefed the Galle Magistrate on the case, handed over the case for further investigations to the CID.

The company in relation to the investigations was Avant Garde Maritime Pvt. Ltd., and its Chairman, Yapa Hetti Pathirannalage Nissanka Yapa Senadhipathi had his passport impounded on 23 January.

Nissanka Senadhipathi through his lawyer yesterday (22) submitted a petition in Courts asking that he be allowed to travel abroad due to business reasons. His lawyers had informed Court that if their client was prevented from going abroad, it was likely that the country would lose close to US$ 25 million per month in revenue and if the company was not able to keep to their agreements, around 20,000 Sri Lankans would lose their jobs.

The CID thus had informed that they had no objection to Senadhipathi's request.Senadipathi thus has been given permission to travel abroad from 22 June to 21 September.

The Additional Magistrate also postponed the case to 6 August.
