President Maithripala Sirisena, as leader of the SLFP, has decided not to give nominations to his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest the upcoming general election, leaving alone giving him the prime minister candidature or appointing him on the national list.
The president has notified a six-member committee that looks into the possibility of uniting the two, about his decision.
Stressing that no one accused of corruption would be given nominations, he said intellectuals and youths would be given opportunities instead.
Cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne announced the president’s decision at a media briefing today (18).
