Sasitharan blames Kanimozhi over Elilan

Sasitharan blames Kanimozhi over Elilan Featured

Northern provincial councilor of the TNA Ananthy Sasitharan has accused India’s DMK party chief M. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi Karunanidhi of failing to ensure the safety of her husband S. Elilan.

Sasitharan has said that Elilan had surrendered to the army during the final stages of the war after Kanimozhi had assured him of his safety.

She told him to leave his arms and surrender saying her father who was the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister at the time, was working with the Indian Government on the surrender. So my husband surrendered and after that we have not heard from him or Kanimozhi,” she said.

Sasitharan said that Kanimozhi must still take responsibility over what happened.

Elilan was the LTTE political chief in Trincomalee but he fled to the north after the east was liberated by the army.

During the final stages of the war in the north, Elilan and several other LTTE members and leaders had surrendered to the army.

Elilan has however not been heard of since and the army had also, following the end of the war, denied any knowledge of his whereabouts, Colombo Gazette reports.

Meanwhile, jdslanka.org reports that a habeas corpus petition filed in 2013 by Sasitharan was taken up by the Mullaitivu district court on June 04.

Sasitharan’s lawyer K. Ratnavel says Elilan had telephoned Kanimozhi in her presence, and that she is an eyewitness to the assurance given by India and the rest of the international community to the surrendering LTTE leaders.

Her evidence also confirms the Sri Lankan military had used the banned phosphorous and cluster bombs against civilians.

Sasitharan said she has been under threat and pressure from military intelligence since the day the petition began to be heard.

She alleged workers of military run farms were transported in buses to stage protests against her in front of the courts.

A May 18 statement by the International Project for Truth and Justice, signed by Yasmin Sooka, lists 110 LTTE members who had surrendered to the military during the final days of the war, jdslanka.org reports.
