CaFFE wants 20th amendment gazetted

CaFFE wants 20th amendment gazetted Featured

CaFFE asks that final changes to the 20th amendment to the constitution be effected at the next cabinet meeting and gazetted as soon as possible.

In a statement, its executive director Keerthi Tennakoon says this will help defeat the opportunistic politicians, who are a minority.

The local election monitor accuses these politicians of trying to sabotage the electoral reforms aimed at changing the extremely corrupt political culture.

Most of them will never be able to get elected under the first-past-the-post system, CaFFE says.

They are directly behind the attempts to prevent appointments to the constitutional council and to bring in changes to weaken the 19th amendment.

The statement goes onto say that these very same politicians are trying to dissolve parliament by tabling a no-confidence motion against the prime minister.

Also, they want to prevent formation of independent commissions and the passage of acts pertaining to right to information and audits, which will lead to their exposure.

The president, the prime minister and the rest of the government should demonstrate their commitment to fulfil their promises by action to pave the way for a change in the political culture.

It is only after the gazetting of the 20th amendment that opportunity is made available to seek the opinions of the judiciary and the general public, CaFFE adds.
